Our friend and colleague Trung invited us to the re-opening of Maxim’s Restaurant (now to be known as Maxim’s Nam An) last night. Maxim’s has been a part of the old Majestic Hotel as a theatre restaurant since 1964, prior to which it was a movie theatre. It was a very popular nightspot for many years, particularly during the war when many American service personal traipsed up and down what was then known as Tu Do Street.
However for the past 5 years or so the old Maxim’s was looking pretty tired and run down, but extensive renovations and clever decorating have once again turned the restaurant into a spectacular place to spend an evening. We were wined and dined in great fashion all the while sitting back and listening to live jazz and enjoying the company of friends.
Maxim’s is a part of the history of old Saigon, and it is good to see that the history has been preserved in this new form. I feel privileged to have been a part of the unveiling.
