safety gear? what safety gear??

Posted 21/10/2010 under Viet Namconstruction

I take my hat off to these guys, I could not do this under any circumstance. IF (and that’s a very big IF) I managed to climb out over the wall onto the rickety bamboo ladder swinging free I wouldn’t be able to accomplish anything cos I would be clinging too hard

Unbelievable.
Playing with their lives.
I guess they don’t have much options, it’s life for them.

I’m starting to warm up to streets photography and now wish I am in VN to capture these amazing happenings there.

yes for sure there are photo opportunities everywhere here. I bought a compact camera that i can keep in my pocket because you never know what you will see. I guess after 7 years i am becoming a bit familiar with things though as now i often forget to take the camera with me.

The thing though too, is that if you point a camera at a Vietnamese, they’ll smile on you.
If you point a camera at an Australian here, sometimes they don’t care, but with a curious look. Alot of the time they don’t give you permissions and you can get into an argument with them.
Legally, they can’t stop you, but what’s the point arguing for a photo anyway.
Just saying.

most will smile, but many regard a camera pointed at them as an intrusion. Quite often i’ve been asked for money. One old lady in Mui Ne indicated i could take her photo and then wanted a copy of it, i couldn’t explain to her that i couldn’t give her a print instantly and she became upset with me.

There are times here i would love to take a shot of some person but feel it will be too intrusive so i refrain

I see.
In that case, you’ll have to be stealth and shot from the hips.
Turn off your LCD, shot from the hips, and shot whilst looking away.

Well, that’s what I’ve been doing around Melbourne lately, most are rubbish, but some are good keepers.

mmm i have tried that but as a foreigner i stand out and i’m usually being stared at so someone gives the game away by shouting out i have a camera. Mostly people are pretty good about it though and don’t mind
