living bridges

Posted 25/09/2011 under other stuff

How incredible are these bridges. What I find amazing however is that until today I had never heard of them.

Growing your own house may seem like a new idea, but what about growing pieces of functional infrastructure? That’s exactly what the locals of Nongriat in Meghalaya, India have been doing for the past 500 years. In that time, they’ve grown bridges over one hundred feet in length and strong enough to support the weight of more than 50 people. There are even “double decker” bridges!

I always thought I was quite creative in making use of the things in my garden but i guess this puts my humble efforts into perspective. Seriously impressive and like you, I’m amazed that I’d not seen them before today.

Yes Martin, it makes me wonder how many other amazing “things” are out there that we just don’t know about.

I hope you’re keeping an eye out for those Funnel Web’s.
