The question however is, what are educational blogs? How do we define a blog, (which is increasingly taken as something personal), as something educational and academic? The different winners of the awards had their own perception of what an educational blog should be. However, according to Mr Farmer: “There are three big areas of ‘educational’ blogs: those that focus on teaching and learning, discipline-specific blogs (in an academic context) and ’service’ area blogs for things like institutional technology, libraries etc.”

Following on from the success of the BlogTalk 1.0 conference which was held in Vienna last May, plans are well under way for BlogTalk 2.0, also to be held in Vienna on the 5-6th of July 2004.
There is a call for papers and the organisers describe the conference thusly…
BlogTalk 2.0 is designed to initiate a dialog between bloggers, developers, researchers and others who share, enjoy and analyse the benefits of blogging. The focus is on weblogs as an expression of a culture based on the exchange of information, ideas and knowledge. In the spirit of the free exchange of opinions, links and thoughts we wish to engage a wide range of participants from the blogosphere in this discourse.
BlogTalk 2.0 will be two days of meetings, discussions, and exchange of research, with attendees sharing experiences, opinions, software developments, and tools of the blogosphere.

Weblogg-ed Vol.2: Using Weblogs in Education

Will Richardson uses weblogs in his classroom and here he is making some comments relevant to both his, and his students experience with blogging as an education tool…
Web logs aren’t without issues. For one, many of my students were disatisfied with the absence of a grade on the assignments they posted. (They would get that if I collected, read, and handed back their work on paper.) I’ve struggled with this issue a bit, and we talked about it in class. Grades are such a touchy issue to so many of my kids that I’m not comfortable including the assessment with the feedback I post online. (And this, actually, is another issue. That little discuss link at the end of every post carries an expectation that I will give feedback or reply to every post. That’s just not realistic.) Some of them suggested posting just a letter grade. Others suggested weekly updates. I’m still mulling over this issue.
